Climate in Badajoz

Badajoz, the capital of the province of the same name in Extremadura, lies beside the Guadiana River at 184 metres above sea level, on the Portuguese border, on the Extremaduran peneplain. Its climate is Mediterranean with some Atlantic influence, with very hot summers and mild winters. The annual average temperature reaches 16.8 °C, with summer highs frequently exceeding 36 °C and winter lows of about 4 °C.

Annual rainfall is approximately 469 mm, concentrated between October and April, with an extremely dry summer. Badajoz enjoys roughly 2,900 hours of sunshine per year. As the westernmost provincial capital in Spain, it occasionally receives Atlantic weather fronts from Portugal, which bring winter rains. Summers are long and scorching, with warm nights. Winter frosts are infrequent but not unknown. The flat terrain favours wind, which can be notable during Atlantic storms.
