Madrid, the capital of Spain and of the Community of Madrid, sits at the heart of the Castilian plateau at 667 metres above sea level. Its climate is classified as continental Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and cold winters. The annual average temperature is around 15 °C, though in July and August the mercury regularly exceeds 35 °C, while January lows frequently dip below 2 °C.

Annual rainfall totals approximately 440 mm, concentrated mainly in autumn and spring. Snowfall is uncommon but not exceptional, averaging one or two events per year. The Sierra de Guadarrama mountains to the north influence the local climate and provide cooling evening breezes during summer.
