Climate in Mérida

Mérida, the capital of Extremadura, sits on a plain beside the Guadiana River at 217 metres above sea level, in the centre of the Extremaduran región. Its climate is continental Mediterranean with slight Atlantic influence, with very hot summers and mild winters. The annual average temperature is around 16.5 °C, with summer highs frequently surpassing 36 °C and winter lows of about 3 °C.

Annual rainfall totals approximately 460 mm, concentrated between October and April, with a virtually dry summer. Mérida enjoys over 2,800 hours of sunshine per year. Its position in the Guadiana basin favours morning fog in autumn and winter, especially near the river. Frosts are infrequent but possible between December and February. The temperature range is significant, with differences of more than 15 °C between day and night in summer months. The surrounding dehesa landscape reflects a climate suited to extensive livestock farming.
