Climate in Santander

Santander, the capital of Cantabria, occupies a península on the Cantabrian Sea coast, beside one of the largest bays in northern Spain, at just a few metres above sea level. Its climate is purely oceanic, with mild temperatures throughout the year, cool summers and temperate winters. The annual average temperature is around 14 °C, with summer highs of only 22 °C and winter lows that rarely drop below 5 °C.

Annual rainfall reaches 1,100 mm, spread throughout the year with a peak in autumn and winter. Rainy days exceed 130 per year. Snow at sea level is exceptional, though the nearby Cantabrian Mountains accumulate significant snowpack. The bay moderates temperature extremes, and the galerna can bring sudden weather changes during the summer months.
