A meteotsunami occurs when a rapid atmospheric pressure disturbance (gust front, squall line) travels over shallow waters at a speed similar to long waves, creating resonance that amplifies the wave.

In the Mediterranean

The Balearic Islands, especially Ciutadella (Menorca), experience the phenomenon called rissaga: oscillations of up to 2–3 metres within minutes that destroy boats in the harbour. They are most frequent in summer, when convective storms generate pressure waves over the shallow continental shelves of the western Mediterranean.
