Province climate

Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of the province of Alava and of the Basque Country, spreads across the Llanada Alavesa plateau at 525 metres above sea level, surrounded by a ring of mountains that shield it from the direct influence of the Cantabrian Sea. Its climate is transitional oceanic, more continental than the coastal Basque capitals, with cold winters and mild summers. The annual average temperature is about 12 °C, with summer highs of 25 °C and winter lows that frequently drop below 0 °C.

Annual precipitation is around 820 mm, well distributed throughout the year. Frosts are common from November to March, and snowfall occurs several times each winter. Morning fog is frequent across the plateau during the cold months, typically clearing by mid-morning. The surrounding mountain barrier shelters the city from the strongest northerly winds.
