Province climate

Almería, the capital of the province of the same name in Andalusia, opens onto the Mediterranean Sea in the southeast of the Iberian Península, barely above sea level, sheltered by the Sierra de Gador. Its climate is arid Mediterranean, the driest in penínsular Spain. The annual average temperature reaches 19 °C, with summer highs of 31 °C and winter lows that rarely fall below 8 °C, thanks to coastal protection.

Annual precipitation is the lowest on the península, barely 196 mm, with summer months that are virtually rainless. Almería holds the European record for sunshine hours, with over 3,000 per year. The proximity of the Tabernas Desert, the only desert in Europe, evidences the extreme aridity of the area. The calima, Saharan dust in suspension, is a relatively frequent phenomenon. Despite the scarcity of rain, when it does fall it can be torrential, typical of the Mediterranean gota fría.
