Province climate

Oviedo, the capital of the Principality of Asturias, lies in an inland depression at 232 metres above sea level, partly sheltered from direct maritime influence by surrounding hills, yet only 25 kilometres from the Cantabrian coast. Its climate is oceanic, with moderate temperatures throughout the year. The annual average temperature is around 13 °C, with summer highs of about 23 °C and winter lows near 4 °C.

Annual rainfall is abundant, approximately 970 mm, distributed throughout the year with peaks between October and January. Overcast days are very common, exceeding 160 per year. Snow appears occasionally in the city during winter, though it is more frequent on the nearby Cantabrian Mountains visible from the city. Fog is a relatively common phenomenon in the Oviedo depression during the cold months.
