Province climate

Castellon de la Plana, the capital of the province of the same name in the Valencian Community, lies on the coastal plain at 30 metres above sea level, a few kilometres from the Mediterranean Sea and at the foot of the Desert de les Palmes. Its climate is typically Mediterranean, with mild winters and warm summers. The annual average temperature is around 17 °C, with summer highs of 30 °C and winter lows of about 6 °C.

Annual rainfall totals approximately 450 mm, with a very pronounced autumn peak. As elsewhere along the Valencian coast, the gota fría can trigger torrential rainfall in just a few hours. Castellon enjoys approximately 2,700 hours of sunshine per year. The sea breeze, locally known as the marinada, moderates summer temperatures. The maestral, a dry, cold northwesterly wind, can blow strongly in winter, clearing the skies and dropping temperatures by several degrees.
