Lugo, the capital of the province of the same name in Galicia, lies in the Galician interior on a plateau at 465 metres above sea level, watered by the Mino River. Its climate is oceanic with marked continental influence, with colder winters and warmer summers than the coastal Galician cities. The annual average temperature is about 12.4 °C, with summer highs of 25 °C and winter lows that frequently drop below 0 °C.

Annual precipitation totals around 1,070 mm, distributed throughout the year with peaks in autumn and winter. Frosts are common from November to March, averaging more than 50 frost days per year. Snow appears several days each winter, occasionally settling in the city. Fog is a very frequent phenomenon in the Lugo depression, especially during winter mornings, when it can persist for much of the day.
