Province climate

Palencia, the capital of the province of the same name in Castilla y León, lies on the plain of Tierra de Campos at 739 metres above sea level, beside the Carrion River, in the heart of the northern meseta. Its climate is continental Mediterranean, with cold winters and hot, dry summers. The annual average temperature is around 11.8 °C, with summer highs of 29 °C and winter lows that regularly fall below -1 °C.

Annual rainfall totals approximately 435 mm, concentrated in spring and autumn. Frost days are very frequent, exceeding 75 per year. Snow appears several days each winter. The Tierra de Campos plain is one of the areas most prone to advection fog in Spain, which during winter can blanket the city for consecutive days. The absence of orographic barriers exposes Palencia to cold winds in winter.
