Province climate

Bilbao, the capital of the province of Biscay in the Basque Country, sits in a narrow river valley carved by the Nervión River, at roughly 19 metres above sea level and a few kilometres from the Cantabrian Sea. Its climate is oceanic, with mild temperatures year-round, cool summers and temperate winters. The annual average temperature is around 14.5 °C, with summer highs near 25 °C and winter lows that rarely fall below 4 °C.

Bilbao is one of the rainiest provincial capitals in Spain, with annual precipitation of around 1,195 mm distributed throughout the year, though heaviest between October and December. Snowfall at city level is very rare. A notable weather phenomenon along the Basque coast is the galerna, a sudden wind shift that causes rapid temperature drops and rough seas, typically occurring in summer months.
