Climate in Murcia

Murcia, the capital of the Region of Murcia, lies in the fértile plain of the Segura River at 43 metres above sea level, surrounded by mountains that create an enclosed basin effect. Its climate is semi-arid Mediterranean, with very hot summers and mild winters. The annual average temperature reaches 18 °C, with summer highs frequently surpassing 35 °C and winter lows that rarely drop below 4 °C.

Annual rainfall is very scarce, barely 301 mm, making it one of the driest capitals in Spain. Rain is concentrated in autumn, when the gota fría can trigger torrential downpours that contrast sharply with the usual aridity. Murcia enjoys more than 2,800 hours of sunshine per year. Its enclosed position in the river basin favours high summer temperatures, as heat accumulates in the depression. Frosts are rare but not unknown on the clearest winter dawns.
