Climate in Tarragona

Tarragona, the capital of the province of the same name in Catalonia, rises on a promontory beside the Mediterranean Sea at 70 metres above sea level, on the Catalan Costa Daurada. Its climate is typically Mediterranean, with mild winters and warm, moderately humid summers. The annual average temperature is around 16.5 °C, with summer highs of 29 °C and winter lows that rarely fall below 5 °C.

Annual rainfall totals approximately 500 mm, with a pronounced autumn peak when rains can be torrential. Tarragona enjoys around 2,600 hours of sunshine per year. The mistral, a cold northwesterly wind, blows with some frequency in winter, clearing the skies and improving visibility. The sea breeze tempers summer heat. Compared to Barcelona, Tarragona receives less precipitation and enjoys a slightly warmer and drier climate, owing to its more southerly position.
