A downdraft is an airflow descending inside a cumulonimbus, driven by precipitation drag and evaporative cooling. Upon hitting the ground, it spreads horizontally as a gust front.
Dangerous variants
When concentrated and violent, it is called a microburst and can produce winds exceeding 150 km/h over a small area. Downdrafts are responsible for most wind damage in non-tornadic thunderstorms.
