Torrential rain is defined as precipitation with intensity exceeding 60 mm/hour (AEMET classifies "very heavy" from 30 mm/h and "torrential" from 60 mm/h). It is one of the most frequent and deadly weather hazards in the Spanish Mediterranean.

In Spain

The Spanish Mediterranean coast is one of Europe's most torrential-rain-prone areas, especially between September and November when DANAs and cold drops interact with the warm sea. Accumulations exceeding 800 mm in 24 hours have been recorded (Oliva-Gandía, 1987). Dry riverbeds (ramblas) become deadly torrents within minutes.
